Electric Cycles and UK Law

Electric bikes are classed as bicycles by UK law as long as they satisfy the following criteria:- Electric Cycles and UK Law
  • The Product must weigh less than 40kg
  • The motor must not exceed 200w continuous power input
  • The maximum assisted speed is 15 mph
  • Working pedals are included

Electric cycles are exempt from road tax, road licence, insurance and MOT costs and are road legal in the UK.
However, UK law requires road users of electric cycles to be 14 year or over.
Although not yet a legal requirement, the use of a cycle helmet is recommended.
